Figurative Art

Yang Tze-Yun's creative journey demonstrates his profound exploration of the fusion of life experience and artistic practice.Since the 1990s, he has been experimenting with the boundaries of calligraphy, coming into contact with Chinese and Western art history, aesthetics, and even vocal music and dance, and these diverse influences have led him to open up a whole new vision of modern calligraphy. After the turn of the millennium, he created six series, including “True Colors”, “Red, Black and White”, and “Red with Green” of Modern Calligraphy. These works, with their unique subjective aesthetics and strong sense of form, demonstrate his deep understanding of calligraphy and his innovative spirit.

Compared to the Modern Calligraphy series, Yang Tze-Yun's miniature series emphasizes the freedom and fun of creation. In the vignettes, he is no longer restricted by the framework of traditional calligraphy, but flexibly integrates the concepts and techniques of calligraphy into his oil paintings, creating works with their own distinctive characteristics. These vignettes are dominated by simple lines and colors, demonstrating his formal versatility while retaining the essence of calligraphy. Yang Tze-Yun's artistic practice not only breaks through the framework of traditional calligraphy, but also embodies the artistic philosophy of “The Way is Simple”. He leaves more room for the viewer's imagination in his works, especially in his semi-abstract approach to the representation of female figures, which makes his works full of interest and possibilities for exploration. In contrast, the Modern Calligraphy series emphasizes formal rigor and momentum, demonstrating his profound metaphysical pursuit of calligraphy. In the miniature works, Yang Tze-Yun emphasizes the playfulness of creation, allowing him to explore freely without restriction, which makes the miniature works more interesting. Through this freedom of exploration, he is able to imply the power of calligraphy in each of his works and integrate his artistic soul with his technique. Overall, Yang Tze-Yun's miniature series is not only his interpretation of creative freedom, but also another way of expression of his exploration of art outside of modern calligraphy.
